During the second day of testimony in the Nichole Rice murder trial, law enforcement officials testified that evidence including a murder weapon and a window screen—examined with help from the Cold Justice TV series due to staffing shortages—provided fresh clues in the case while raising questions about alternate suspect Devin Hall.

A former lawmaker, Ray Holmberg, pleaded guilty to traveling abroad for sex with adolescent boys and was accused of exploiting vulnerable youth while working at Grand Forks Central High School — he will be sentenced on March 26 in U.S. District Court in Fargo.

Lawmakers are set to restore a bonus for new teachers under House Bill 1498 after the bonus program was accidentally removed in 2023.

Rural school leaders say the bonus will help recruit teachers — the Senate Workforce Development Committee will discuss the bill soon.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol announced that its newest bloodhound, Gary—imported from Mississippi—is training in mantrailing with Trooper Nevon Heisler to help find lost people in the Grand Forks area and other parts of the state.

Gary will be certified—basic in 6 months and fully in 9 months—and will patrol about half of the state.
