- ➤ Safe Kids Grand Forks will host its annual Hands On Learning Fair on Saturday, April 5 at the Purpur and Gambucci hockey arenas in Grand Forks from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—the free event is aimed at expecting parents, caregivers and children 10 and younger and will feature interactive safety activities, event bags for the first 500 families and a drawing for KEM Shrine Circus tickets. - ➤ Simonson Station Stores is developing 100 acres in northwest Grand Forks to expand FreightEx operations and add industrial space near Gateway Drive and Interstate 29 — the company seeks to overcome space limits. - ➤ The Grand Forks Police Department warned residents on April 2 that law enforcement does not call to demand immediate payment for warrants using methods like gift cards, Bitcoin, Venmo, CashApp, Paypal, Ecash or Western Union—advising anyone contacted to verify the call with local officers before sending money and to keep personal details safe. - ➤ A New Rockford man, Kyle Kahalehili Maez-Schaack, pleaded guilty to five criminal charges for fleeing law enforcement during a May 2024 traffic stop in Grand Forks County and was sentenced to serve four years in prison with supervised probation after credit for 291 days served—he had a record of more than 30 prior arrests. - ➤ Gov. Kelly Armstrong has made interim state Labor Commissioner Zachary Greenberg the permanent commissioner after he led the department since January. Greenberg—born in Winnipeg and a graduate of the University of Minnesota Crookston and the University of North Dakota School of Law in Grand Forks—worked as a law clerk in 2022 and then served as a legal and policy advisor in the governor’s office. - ➤ Three of five county commissioners called for firing Correctional Center Administrator Bret Burkholder after the state said he did not follow spending guidelines for a state grant. The county sheriff’s office, which oversees his role, must act since only the sheriff can remove him. Knox News Radio
- ➤ East Grand Forks City Council approved local cannabis business fees Tuesday night—most businesses will pay between $250 and $500 for registration with renewals at about $1,000 while officials noted the state has not set a timeline for issuing licenses. The council also approved purchasing a playground for Griggs Park Trailhead and a permit to close the parking lot for East Grand Forks High School prom on May 3 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Grand Forks Herald
- ➤ Gov. Kelly Armstrong signed House Bill 1503—Tyanna’s Law—on Wednesday with strong support from lawmakers. The law, inspired by teen Tyanna Weeks from Minot who was hurt in a DUI crash last January, upgrades the penalty for causing harm while driving under the influence to a B felony with a maximum sentence of 10 years and will go into effect Aug. 1.
