Jeffrey Simpson Jr. was sentenced Wednesday afternoon to 25 years in prison on charges including attempted murder following a March 2024 shootout with officers at an apartment complex in Grand Forks—no one was injured.

The state House passed Senate Bill 2241 to let public charter schools operate with their own governing boards while following public school rules—schools must meet performance benchmarks set by the Department of Public Instruction, cannot charge tuition or teach a religious curriculum, and will receive about $8,160 per student in state funding for 2024-25.

The City of Grand Forks said road construction season will start next week when North Washington Street will be reduced to one lane—local drivers should plan for delays.

City crews will work on repairs and advise drivers to use alternate routes during the project.
