CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Forks Police surrounded a building near the Islamic Center on 17th Avenue South yesterday afternoon—residents were advised to avoid the street from Columbia Road to South 20th Street while officers responded to an in-progress call.  Knox News Radio
  • Grand Forks police arrested Abdi Ahmedali for attempted armed robbery and kidnapping after he pointed a gun at a man in a car and entered the Islamic Center; officers arrived shortly before 2:30 p.m. Monday at 2122 17th Ave S — they are continuing their investigation.  Valley News Live
  • Moses Ayom is accused of stabbing 37-year-old Travis Vigen with a pocket knife at Northlands Rescue Mission on November 1 and later fleeing after stealing a truck and crashing—he told police his unprovoked attack was because Vigen is white and claimed pressure from Joe Biden, while a court hearing on April 21 ruled he is not fit for trial and continued his case to June 2.  Valley News Live

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality opened a comment period on the proposed Herberg Dairy in Traill County to address concerns about managing manure from 25,000 cows. Public comments can be submitted online until June 2—a public hearing is scheduled at Hillsboro High School gym on May 20 from 5 to 8 p.m.  Knox News Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cirrus Aircraft wants to grow its operation in Grand Forks by adding 30,000 square feet and recently received a tax perk that included a payment in lieu of taxes. City Council will hold a public hearing on Monday, June 2nd at 5:30 p.m. at city hall before voting on the deal—Council Member Rebecca Osowski said the Chinese government owns part of the company and gets 1 percent of its revenue, including $12 million from a 2024 earning of $1.2 billion.  Knox News Radio
  • House Bill 1298 passed in the Senate and would raise the interstate speed limit from 75 to 80 mph while imposing a fine of five dollars per mile per hour over the limit — it will next return to the House for approval before moving to Governor Kelly Armstrong’s desk. A similar bill was vetoed two years ago by former Governor Doug Burgum.  Valley News Live
