EDUCATION NEWS

  • The North Dakota House voted 78-14 against Senate Bill 2400, a proposal to create Education Savings Accounts for public and homeschool students, after Gov. Kelly Armstrong vetoed a related bill. House Majority Leader Mike Lefor said the plan’s high cost—$110 million—helped kill the measure and he does not expect a similar proposal to be reintroduced this session.  Knox News Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Trooper James Myers III was awarded the NDHP Distinguished Service Medal for his brave actions on March 23 in Grand Forks County—officers responded to a shooting in Larimore when a spouse drove into the home to reach her husband while an armed suspect fired at officers, and Myers helped secure the scene and take the gunman into custody.  Knox News Radio
  • U.S. Representative Julie Fedorchak will hold a telephone town hall meeting on May 1 at 7 p.m. for constituents to discuss legislative issues — interested residents must register by noon on May 1.  Knox News Radio
  • Gov. Armstrong signed a law banning cell phones in schools today. The ban will be enforced once education officials issue final guidelines (details on timing are not yet confirmed).  Valley News Live
  • North Dakota is the first state to pass a law protecting pesticide manufacturers by accepting EPA-approved labels as sufficient warnings—Gov. Kelly Armstrong signed House Bill 1318, setting a model for similar legislation in other states.  Knox News Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gov. Kelly Armstrong signed a law that limits delays in patient care by curbing how insurance companies use the process of prior authorization — the measure aims to ensure patients get needed treatments without unexpected postponements.  Knox News Radio
