EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Gov. Kelly Armstrong said that House Bill 1160 will require all personal communication devices to be securely stowed from the start to the end of the school day in K-12 public schools—this law will become effective Aug. 1 and was supported by Lt. Gov. Michelle Strinden, State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler and other lawmakers who wanted to improve student focus. Knox News Radio
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The North Dakota Senate unanimously passed House Bill 1168, a backup property tax reform plan that mirrors many provisions of Gov. Kelly Armstrong’s favored measure. The bill offers tax relief measures such as a primary residence credit up to $1,650 + a renters rebate expansion, and it prepares state lawmakers for future adjustments if the primary measure fails. - ➤ Crews have closed 27th Ave. N. between N. 39th St. and Rivards Turf and Forage west of Washington St. due to frost-damaged conditions — teams will grade and reopen the road once the frost is gone. Knox News Radio
- ➤ Gov. Armstrong vetoed a library obscenity bill and a private school funding measure after lawmakers did not secure a two-thirds vote to override his decisions—he urged legislators to back a broader Education Savings Account plan, which also failed to pass. Knox News Radio
- ➤ North Dakota lawmakers are debating a gas tax increase as House members advanced a 5-cent proposal to raise the motor fuels tax to 28 cents for road repairs—while the Senate unanimously defeated a separate 3-cent proposal to support property tax cuts. Knox News Radio
