EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Jim Poolman resigned from the University of North Dakota Alumni Association and Foundation board and the Forever UND campaign committee effective immediately because he said he did not want to distract the University as he was reportedly targeted after coming out as gay. Vice Chair Darla Adams in Grand Forks will assume his duties until her formal election next week. Valley News Live
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Walsh County voters will decide on May 13 whether to fund a new $42 million jail in Grafton, which would replace the aging facility that currently lacks space and efficient repairs. The project—supported by proposals for up to 20 additional mills and 3/4 of a 1% sales tax and including an informational meeting on May 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the Walsh County Courthouse—will be completed in 2027 if approved. - ➤ North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong vetoed Senate Bill 2160, which would have shifted state employee health insurance to an ACA-compliant plan that critics said would force employees to pay premiums+ he noted that current health plans are a crucial recruitment and retention tool for the state. - ➤ The City of Grand Forks announced that bids for the new Altru Sports Complex came in lower than expected. The project is projected to cost $19 million less than predicted — and the city will break ground in June. Knox News Radio
- ➤ Grand Forks City Council will meet next week to discuss a camping ordinance that lets officers enforce a measure similar to Fargo’s using a non-criminal fine up to $1,000 as set by City Code 9-0502. Police Chief Jason Freedman said there has been a rise in violent behavior lately—some council members worry the move could be seen as criminalizing homelessness. Valley News Live
