CRIME NEWS

  • Grand Forks police arrested 34-year-old Cory Juaire on May 26 for terrorizing after he threatened to stab two people, prompting a call from a frightened citizen.  Valley News Live

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Dakota will raise the interstate speed limit to 80 mph on August 1 — a change based on studies showing most drivers already travel at that speed. Officials warn that higher speeds lead to longer stopping distances — urging drivers to adopt speeds that match their comfort levels.  Valley News Live
  • On May 27, the Grand Forks Police Department flew its flag at half-staff to honor Officer Cody Holte, who died in 2020 while helping serve an eviction notice; the action marked the fifth anniversary of his death and celebrated his three years of service with the department (and as a National Guard member).  Valley News Live
  • The North Dakota Legislature passed bills that require age verification on websites with explicit content and increase civil penalties for creating or distributing nonconsensual deepfake pornography — Gov. Kelly Armstrong signed both bills. The new measures will go into effect on Aug. 1.  Knox News Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Altru Health Systems announced today that demolition has begun on its legacy hospital in Grand Forks, and the process will be completed in stages by the end of the summer—clearing space for a larger patient and guest parking lot for a new building.  Valley News Live
  • The Department of Health reported two new measles cases in Grand Forks County linked to international travel, making it the third county with confirmed cases. Officials said Williams County recorded 13 cases while Cass County recorded six including one hospitalization — all cases involve unvaccinated people and it will take 42 days without new cases to end the outbreak.  Knox News Radio
  • The North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services confirmed two more measles cases—one from Cass County and one from Grand Forks County—bringing the total number of cases to 23 statewide. Officials reported that all cases were among unvaccinated individuals and one person was hospitalized.  Valley News Live
