A Grand Forks correctional officer, Juan Ortiz Lopez, was arrested on June 16 for allegedly smuggling an electronic device to an inmate (a C felony offense) after a June 13 tip led investigators to question him at work and search jail cells that uncovered a cell phone and charger.

Ground broke Tuesday on the expansion of Altru’s Behavioral Health Center in Grand Forks that will add 24 beds to its current 18 adult and 6 adolescent beds & officials including Governor Kelly Armstrong and Representative Emily O’Brien secured key funding at the event.

The center is expected to open by Fall of 2026 & will provide improved mental health care in the community.
