- ➤ On Dec. 1, departments at UND braved cold weather to launch the UND Community Quilt Project, an initiative aimed at creating a large quilt that celebrates the Year of Community+ Each department will design a square for the 144-piece quilt that the North Star Quilting Guild in East Grand Forks will stitch together by May. - ➤ State School Superintendent Levi Bachmeier said North Dakota improved its grade on a national financial literacy report card—upgrading from a C to a B after lawmakers enacted a law that requires high school students to complete half a unit of financial literacy and moves the state toward its goal of being the most financially literate by 2027. - ➤ UND is building its new Free-Space Optical Communication Lab in Witmer Hall, which will begin operations in 2026 and serve as the nation’s first fully operational university-run laser communications ground station—providing hands-on training for students and a testbed for government and industry partners. - ➤ NDDOT warned drivers after five snow plows were hit this season—officials said extra care on icy roads is needed. The department is monitoring the situation and will adjust operations if incidents continue. Valley News Live
