COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In East Grand Forks, Sacred Heart Catholic School held its 35th annual fish supper series that began on March 7 and served 400 to 500 community members while helping fund school athletics. Bethany Lutheran Church will host its 33rd reenactment of The Last Supper on April 17 at 8 p.m.—a Holy Week event that brings local residents together.  Grand Forks Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • Jeffrey Simpson Jr. was sentenced Wednesday afternoon to 25 years in prison on charges including attempted murder following a March 2024 shootout with officers at an apartment complex in Grand Forks—no one was injured.  Valley News Live

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The state House passed Senate Bill 2241 to let public charter schools operate with their own governing boards while following public school rules—schools must meet performance benchmarks set by the Department of Public Instruction, cannot charge tuition or teach a religious curriculum, and will receive about $8,160 per student in state funding for 2024-25.  Knox News Radio
  • School district and union negotiators met Tuesday to review a new tool that calculates how special education teachers spend time on instruction and paperwork—aiming to better balance their schedules and protect prep and lunch times. Administrators and special educators said the tool may guide future staffing and workload decisions.  Grand Forks Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Grand Forks said road construction season will start next week when North Washington Street will be reduced to one lane—local drivers should plan for delays. City crews will work on repairs and advise drivers to use alternate routes during the project.  Knox News Radio
  • The city of Grand Forks is permanently merging its 911 operations with the fire department—shifting to a new dispatch model—after PSAP Director Shannon LaHaise resigned on March 28, City Administrator Todd Feland said. Fire Chief Gary Lorenz said he met with PSAP staff and expects the change to support smooth emergency service operations.  Grand Forks Herald
